Founded in 1870 by Louis Borsheim, the company was purchased in 1947 by Louis Friedman and was shaped by his son, Ike Friedman, to become the phenomenon that it is today. The first small store, offering a wide variety of merchandise to customers, was located in downtown Omaha. In 1986, Borsheims had outgrown its downtown facility, thus prompting a move to its current location in fashionable Regency Court. After a series of carefully planned expansions, today Borsheims is a 45,000-square-foot enterprise with loyal customers in all fifty states and six continents.
In 1989, Borsheims became part of the Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. family. Through a simple handshake, Chairman and CEO Warren E. Buffett purchased the majority of Borsheim’s stock from Ike Friedman. Mr. Buffett gave the management team straightforward directions, “Don’t change a thing.”
Susan Jacques, Borsheims current president and CEO, is one of the few women executives in the jewelry industry and has been frequently honored for her integrity. In 2004, the Jewelers Charity Fund for Children presented Ms. Jacques as Facets of Hope honoree. Additionally, Ms. Jacques was awarded the Women’s Jewelry Association’s Annual Award for Excellence in Retail. Borsheims is regarded as a leader in the jewelry and fine gifts industries and has received awards for our excellence including the the Most Dynamic Retailer Award and National Jeweler Retailer Hall of Fame.
